MARGARET BEEKS ELEMENTARY EVENTS/ACTIVITIES*
FALL:
Meet the Teacher Night (School Event)– This evening is a chance for students and parents to meet their teachers for the upcoming year and drop off school supplies. This evening normally is one evening during the week before school starts.
Curriculum Nights (School Event) – Teachers will explain what your child will be learning academically during the year. Students are encouraged to attend the Meet & Greet event so they can meet their teacher. It is recommended for parents only to attend Curriculum night so the teacher can focus on providing information and answering parent questions. However, we understand if children need to attend.
School Pictures (School/PTO Event) – A company will take pictures twice a year, once in the fall and once in the spring. Fall pictures will be used in the yearbook. In the fall, parents will pre-order pictures they would like to purchase. Spring pictures are sent home with the option to purchase. This is a fundraiser for the school.
Fall Community Event (PTO) – The Fall Community event is a fun night for families! This event typically happens in September or October, and is a great way to bring together Beeks families to get to know one another.
Taste of Countries International Night (PTO) – International Night will celebrate the diverse cultures found in countries throughout the world as well as in our school. Families and community members have an opportunity to share cuisine from their heritage at International Night. Join the Beeks community for a Taste of the Countries! Our taste buds will travel through international samplings as we get to know our fellow Beeks families.
Parent-Teacher Conferences (School Event) - Conferences are held in the Fall and Spring. Parents and teachers are given 30 minutes to discuss the progress of students.
Book Fair (School Event) – The Book Fair raises funds for the library and gives students and teachers the opportunity to add Scholastic Books to their collections. Teachers fill out a wish list at the Book Fair allowing families to purchase books for the classroom as well. The Book fair is held twice a year: once in the fall and once in the spring. Students will be given time during the school day to review the book fair and list books they might be interested in purchasing.
SPRING:
Read-A-Thon Fundraiser (PTO Event) – This is our largest fundraiser of the year where students track how much they read, ask friends and family to sponsor their efforts with donations, and get the chance to win fun prizes, including gift cards, treats, classroom parties or an opportunity to be principal for a day! Last year we raised $10,000.
One Book One School (School/PTO Event) – Each family will be given a book that will be read throughout the week at school and at home. At the end of the reading there will be an evening celebration.

Teacher Appreciation Week (PTO Event) - While there are many ways we will be celebrating the teachers, one tradition in particular is a favorite of both the children and the teachers. We have a week of activities planned including bringing a homemade gift to your teacher and daily raffles for teachers and staff to win. The PTO organizes events during this week for the staff as well. Each classroom Room Parent will also organize a gift with the parents and students to give to the teacher.
OTHER ACTIVITIES SCHOOL KIDS ARE INVITED TO PARTICIPATE WITH OTHER MARGARET BEEKS STUDENTS:
Happy Feet - Happy Feet Running “Club” gives students a chance to get moving before school. Students meet by grade level with a coach twice a week before school starts.
Books for Breakfast – Students are invited to breakfast at Beeks cafeteria the third Thursday of each month. Students get to leave with a gently used book of their choice.
Restaurant Nights – Join other Beeks families for a meal at a local restaurant. Participating restaurants also donate a portion of the proceeds to Beeks PTO.
*This is an example of past years, so months of activities are subject to change. Additional information will be sent home throughout the year about these and other programs MBE has to offer. Please visit the MBE school calendar for updated information, www.mcps.org/mbes.
